Frosty Soccer Season

As I sit here, the weather is unseasonably warm. However, that’s about to change. No surprise there. Spoiler alert: it gets colder about this time every year — right about this time.

In the warmer months, we kick off at about 8:30 AM. (Although I would not call us fanatics about hitting our start time.) By 9:00 AM this Sunday, the temps should be in the low 40s. That works. By that time, the frost should be off the grass.

Let’s kick-off by 9:00 AM. Come before that so you can have a proper warm-up before playing. If you can’t get there by 9:00, get there when you can.

Please bring a white shirt and a dark shirt. This is critical to balance the teams.

Also, remember that the clocks “fall back” an hour this weekend. Be aware of time. When you see me, remember to ask me to expound on why I think changing the clocks is really stupid. It is.

Lastly, happy Diwali! I love the holiday season (Halloween to the Super Bowl).

The most perfect time of year for soccer

Those of you who know me (and many of you have known me for many years) know that I think EVERY day is a perfect day to play soccer. But there’s just something wonderful about playing this time of year.

There is a nip in the air in the morning, but the temperatures quickly get to an almost ideal temp by the time the game really gets going. Warm enough, but not too hot. Humidity is usually low. The leaves on the trees are colorful. It feels like the game was just made for October. As perfect as it feels, you know in the back of your mind that these ideal conditions don’t last. November is generally a mixed bag. Then we are done playing outdoors on the big grass fields until next spring. When the weather is right, October is just so perfect.

The weather forecast for this Sunday looks great. I know that the Patriots are playing the morning game. Just record that and watch it when you get home. PLAYING is so much more fun than watching people play. Yardwork can wait until the afternoon, or you should get that out of the way on Saturday. Come play. Don’t watch the clock. Just play as long as we can.

When you are doing yardwork and errands, wear your grey shirts. On Sunday mornings, bring a white shirt and a colored shirt. Turn your phone off. Don’t look at your watch (or ask Dave what time it is). Just play.

8:30 AM at Murphy Field.

Kick-off is at 8:30 AM every Sunday

I am looking for you to commit to being on time to be fully warmed-up and ready to kick-off this Sunday no later than 8:29 AM.

It drags the whole game down when so many people are late and ill-prepared to start on time. If Sunday morning is not the highlight of your weekend, then I just don’t understand. It is the highlight of my weekend. I can’t wait to play.

Please set your alarm to make sure that you get up on time to be at the field no later than 8:10 AM. If you had a late night the night before, you can take a nap after lunch. Naps are great. Not as great as soccer, but naps are pretty great too.

On a personal note…I am still injured and still working on getting well enough to be back on the field. Not there yet. Hoping to be back in 2025. I miss everything about our Sunday morning games.

Every Sunday at Murphy at 8:30 AM

We’re in mid-season form now. I may not post to the blog every week. Just know that we are at Murphy each week at 8:30 AM unless there is a post that says otherwise.

Bring a white shirt. Bring a dark shirt. Bring a willingness to take your turn as goalkeeper. Bring a good attitude. It is a fun kickaround. We take it serious enough, but not too seriously.

Soccer is the best way to celebrate

May is full of holidays. May Day, Polish Constitution Day, Star Wars Day (May the Fourth), and Cinco de Mayo, among others. What better way to celebrate all of these spring days than to play soccer?

Sunday morning’s weather looks okay as of now, but that might change. Remember that we don’t play on the grass fields if they are wet. A little drizzle and we don’t care. If they are really wet from the night before or if it is raining at game time, then we skip it.

Let’s be ready ready to kick off by 9:00 AM. I am looking forward to seeing everyone.

Begun. The Soccer Season Has

As Yoda, that legendary footballer said “Play on Sunday we must. “

Kick-off no later than 9:00 AM it is. Will the dark side win? Know this not. The future is difficult to see. Know that grey shirts play not.

Be there for a good warm-up before the game. Do or do not. There is no try.

Murphy Field. See you there.

Only Goal Keepers in the House

We had a good first week of our spring season. Yay! This Sunday looks like another good day to play.

One of the unique things about our game is that it is truly democratic. No coaching. Just play. And…everyone takes a turn playing goal keeper.

Unless someone wants to play keeper longer, we share the keeper duties. If you are part of this group, you are going to have to take your turn minding the pipes.

Sometimes someone has an injury which makes too much running difficult and they play keeper for a longer period of time. We occasionally get people who want to play keeper for half the game or more or who accidently wear a grey shirt and are ineligible to play in the field. Generally, we just share the duty.

We are playing SOCCER this Sunday

The grey (shirt) days are over. Weather looks good.

Let’s play this Sunday. Get to Murphy in time to do a good warm-up and be ready to kick-off no later than 9:00 AM.

Bring a white shirt. Bring a dark shirt. Each player having these two shirts makes it easier to balance the teams. Makes it more fun for everyone.

Remember that this is an adult game. We play hard, we play fair, and we have fun.

Sunday, Sunday! SUNDAY!!!
