Scrimmage (in white) versus Winchester this Sunday at 9 a.m. at Murphy

We had a great turnout of 19 players last Sunday at Murphy for a full (shortened) field game.  This Sunday, we’re going to change the format a bit for the pickup game as we’ve invited a neighborhood pickup game in Winchester to come join us for a scrimmage.  Mike Kahan and his son Kevin have played with the Winchester group, and he assures us that the adult players are just as old and injured as we are so it should be a fun match.  Please bring white shirts (and a blue shirt in case we need to balance the teams) as they’ll be in blue.  They expect to have 11+ players, so we’ll have 11 players on the field at a time and unlimited substitutions.  It should be a fun, full-field game–hope to see you there.

Let’s go for a full field game at Murphy this Sunday!

We had 17 players last Sunday for our first game at Murphy Field this year, which was a good turnout for a vacation week but not quite enough for a full-field game on an 11 v 11 field. Let’s get a few more people out there and make it happen! Please spread the word; look forward to seeing you at Murphy on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. If it looks like we might get a thunderstorm, please check the website before you head over for any late-breaking announcements.

As we’ve progressed to becoming a bona fide organization, the Chelmsford Sunday Soccer Club, we’ve updated our web site address to make it easier to remember. You can now find us at www.chelmsfordsundaysoccer.com. No need to update any saved links, because the old wordpress address will still work as well, but now you have another option. Remember that you can subscribe to this blog using the e-mail subscription option on the right side of the web page if you’re not already signed up–it’s a spam-free subscription and your address is never publicly visible. There’s only one e-mail each week unless there is late-breaking news; we currently have 18 subscribers.

In our first week we had 4 members who ponied up the $50 annual fee to help support the Sunday pickup game and help cover our insurance costs–thanks guys!  Please consider joining if you’re not coaching or playing in CYSA this fall in order to avoid the per game charge of $5. I’m looking for a volunteer to be treasurer and collect and deposit the funds that we receive each week in a new Chelmsford Sunday Soccer Club bank account that we’re setting up, so please let me know if you’re interested. Please make any checks payable to the Chelmsford Sunday Soccer Club. Any proceeds beyond our limited expenses will be donated to CYSA. Thanks again for all of your support!

Reminder: We’re moving to Murphy Field for the rest of the summer starting this Sunday, July 1st!

Just a quick reminder that we’re moving the Sunday soccer pickup game to Murphy Field (back field) for the rest of the summer.  Please spread the word; see you there at 9:00 a.m.

Also, if you didn’t see my earlier post about changes to the Sunday pickup game, you can find it here:

https://sundaysoccerchelmsford.wordpress.com/2012/06/28/changes-to-sunday-pickup-soccer-game-next-game-at-murphy-this-sunday-july-1st/

We’re becoming a real organization, so you can make checks for the annual membership fee payable to the Chelmsford Sunday Soccer Club.  Every dollar goes directly to supporting our Sunday pickup game and the CYSA.  On behalf of our little pickup soccer club and the CYSA, we greatly appreciate your support.

Changes to Sunday Pickup Soccer game; next game AT MURPHY this Sunday, July 1st

Good news:  The back field at Murphy Field has recovered sufficiently that we can move our Sunday pickup game there for the rest of the summer.  Hooray!  We’ve had really good numbers this spring, and we’ve seen even more players over the past few weeks, so moving to the larger field at Murphy will give us more room to accommodate the increased turnout.  The Murphy front field is reserved for the high school teams during the week, so we will need to stay off that field to keep it in good shape, but the back field will give us much more room and it worked out very well last summer.

Unfortunately we also need to make another change to our Sunday pickup soccer game.  As you may know, the Chelmsford Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) allows us to play on their fields without charge, and they cut the grass and line the fields for us at their expense because they know that many current and former CYSA coaches and players are involved in the Sunday pickup game.  However, their insurance only covers active players and coaches, and now that a number of our kids have moved on to high school and even college, and a number of dads have retired from active CYSA coaching, there are players each week who are not covered by the CYSA insurance policy.  It has long been CYSA’s policy to require liability insurance for outside groups that use their soccer fields, and we  must now also fall under that policy.

As a longtime former CYSA coach, it’s painful for me to have to make a change to a simple pickup game that has become an institution of sorts for many of us on Sunday mornings.  When it came down to it, we really only had two choices:  limit the game to only current CYSA players and coaches, or pursue a separate liability insurance policy so that everyone who wanted to participate could remain involved in the game.  The Sunday pickup game is very important to many of us, so I’ve chosen to go the latter route and I have purchased a separate liability insurance policy to cover our Sunday pickup games (at a cost of $546 for the next 12 months) so that everyone can continue to play on Sunday mornings.

I am hoping to recoup that cost and hopefully help contribute to the upkeep of the CYSA fields with your help.  For players and coaches who are not currently active with CYSA, I would like to ask for a donation of $5 per game from you to help defray this expense.  To make this more cost effective for frequent players and also make it easier to manage this, I’d like to offer an annual membership in the “Chelmsford Sunday Soccer” club for $50, which will cover all games for the next 12 months (last year there were over 30 games, so that reduces the cost to well under $1 per hour of playing time–still a bargain by any measure).  There will be a cap of $100 for families.  Current players and coaches (those who are registered to play/coach this fall and will therefore be covered under CYSA’s policy) will not have to pay, but donations will of course be accepted.  Any money collected beyond the cost of the insurance policy will be donated to CYSA, and I am hoping there will be extra money because I think it’s important for us to help support CYSA’s work, especially by contributing to the upkeep of the fields that we all use.

I know that this is unwelcome news, and that it speaks volumes about the  litigious nature of our society when a longstanding group of soccer players can’t just get together and play a simple game on a Sunday morning any more.  But it’s a fact of life, we’ve been fortunate to not have to go this route before now, and we’ve got a solution that allows us to keep playing in the same fashion without major inconvenience.  Now that this is out of the way, let’s get on with the game.

I look forward to seeing you next Sunday morning at Murphy!

-Mark

Pickup Soccer this Sunday, 6/10

The weather this Sunday should be a dramatic improvement over last weekend’s drench-fest, so see you out there at 9 a.m. this Sunday morning at Highland Field!

Pickup Soccer CANCELLED this Sunday, June 3rd due to field conditions

We’ve already had over an inch of rain today, and another inch+ is expected tonight, so the field will be too soggy and subject to damage tomorrow for us to play (even if it has stopped raining).  Stay dry, rest up, and hopefully we’ll be back on track for next Sunday’s game.
