A couple of people have recently asked me why our game moves fields. The simple answer is that we live within the CYSA ecosystem.
Our game is not technically part of CYSA, but the main purpose has always been as an outlet for coaches, and those interested in coaching, to have a place to play. Coaches who also play are usually better coaches and are almost always easier coaches to play for. Since soccer is a game of mistakes, a playing coach does not have to think too hard to remember when he or she mishandled the ball, made a bad pass, missed a shot, etc. Usually makes them more patient with the kids. I think that it is also valuable for all of us to remember that soccer is a game. Just a game. If the adults are playing too, that’s a bit easier to remember.
Our game also exists for older players (high school and above) to have a place to play without coaching, without anyone telling them where to play, and to work on skills. I noticed one player trying to play almost entirely with his left recently. It was cool. I also really enjoy the players who used to play for Chelmsford who still play on Sundays.
CYSA goes to great lengths to manage the fields. They set them up in different configurations each season, they rest them, they maintain them very well. We work with CYSA to play where they would like us to play. In the summer and the winter that is the McCarthy turf. In the spring and fall we get CYSA to direct us. Like I said, we live inside of the CYSA ecosystem. For this fall season, we are on the big field at Harrington.
The only downside of any of this is that you are forced to have to read this blog from time to time. Otherwise, it is all cool.
One more note. I think that more of us may have to bring soccer balls on Sunday.
